The Leadville Heap

haphazardly.)

Tunneling for Facts

The Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel has been our biggest news story this
winter.  There's lots of information available, if you are interested.
The only thing we want to add to the discussion is that it is
safe to
visit Leadville.  Our drinking water supply is
not affected.  And,
contrary to nationwide news reports, there will
not be a toxic tidal
wave roaring down Harrison Avenue.

Nobody wants mine water seeping into the Arkansas River, and we're glad
that pumping has begun and steps are being taken to fix the tunnel
permanently, but it may be time to lift the disaster declaration.  We've
heard that the disaster declaration is now being attached to closing
documents when buying real estate in the county.

On another related topic, is there someone out there willing to sue the
BOCC for violating the open meetings law?  Any citizen can sue, and
their attorney will be awarded fees if they win.  And the odds should be
good that the citizen will win, as Ethics Watch has already determined
that the BOCC did in fact violate the law.
